Gia Has New Goat Buddies

Nigerian Dwarf Goats. 1 year old Mongo and 3 month old Bongo. Both males. Much like the process of meeting and getting used to the cats Gia has befriended, it took a couple of days for her to fulfill her need to get up close and personal and heartily sniff the goats and get that out of her system. The goats were not helpful in this regard as they were a bit frightened of this new dog in their midst that behaved in a more intense and forward way than the other dogs they had been getting used to for a week before Gia came on the scene.

The goats quickly made themselves at home on the Tacoma (and in if I am dumb enough to leave a door open).
Once détente was reached the goats were more inclined to be the ones to initiate contact with Gia, cautiously coming up to smell her and any toys she had around her.

Further bonding was made on the numerous walks we take around the ranch from the garden area on one end of the property or down the old railroad tracks to the other end of the property.

But everyone’s absolute favorite is our almost daily walks (we usually take more than one) the whopping several hundred meters down to the river for the dogs to swim and run around and the goats to cavort as well.

Up on the house porch the goats take turns making themselves comfortable on each and every dog bed that is out

Gia has visited and interacted with the goats three times now over 18 months for a total of around 90 days and they are seemingly comfortable in each other’s presence, even during bouts of simulated “prey” behavior. “Friends” might be a bit too strong of a word but Gia has been known to playfully “chase” the goat boys and they in turn have been known to turn around and chase her right back and no tension or damage has ever happened during those types of encounters. On their second meeting after being away for over six months, Gia went right up to the goats to give them a sniff and they did not act skittish or afraid and in fact sniffed her right back.

We are scheduled to get to spend another bout at the ranch with the goats, chickens, cats and other dogs for two months next year (March – April) and are looking forward to it.
